Grey Beards Antiques

by Rick

Today JoAnn & I visited a really nice antique mall about 15 minutes from Vintage JoAnn.  I can’t believe we lived this close for this long and haven’t been there before now.

Grey Beards Antiques is located at 51 N. Main Street in Jacobus, PA.  It’s just a few minutes off Route 83 Exit 10 coming from the South or Exit 14 from the North.

Antique malls run the gamut from junk shops (where you feel like you need to leave a trail of bread crumbs to find your way back out but they would probably be eaten before you turned around) to elegant, over the top, I wish I had worn a tux places that are fun to poke around in but are not for mere mortals to buy things at.  Grey Beards is very comfortably in the middle of these two extremes.

Located in what used to be a large furniture store, there are 4 floors of goodies under roof plus a nice little restaurant/coffee shop for less interested spousal units to hang out in or to take a break in between floors.  I had a great cup of coffee, a desert I can’t describe in case my doctor reads this and got to watch the Ravens pound Detroit on a well positioned TV.  They have a nice menu for those who are hungrier.

The staff was very friendly and helpful, which shouldn’t be remarkable but if you’ve spent as much time in these places as I have, trust me, it is.  The layout is not crammed, is easy to navigate and well lit.  None of the booths were over stuffed.  There was a plethora (love that word even though I should have used ‘wide variety’) of merchandise from all different periods.  The owners obviously have rules which are enforced because there was no merchandise spilling into the aisles, none of the booths looked junky and there were no new knockoffs being passed off as the real deal.

JoAnn saw a number of booths with vintage jewelry and one vintage clothing dealer.  There were dealers with old tools, at least one with sports memorabilia and others too numerous to mention.

If you live in this area you need to visit this antique mall.  If you’re coming from farther away you’ve got the Antique Corner here in Red Lion, Burning Bridge in Columbia and Grey Beards to make a very full day of it or stay at the Red Lion Bed & Breakfast for an antiquing weekend. Click on the “While You’re in the Area” link to the right for more about each of these opportunities.
