JoAnn’s Personal News and Updates

by JoAnn

A lot of folks have been asking me a lot of questions lately why I do things a certain way at my shop, such as why I am only open 4 days a week .

I’d like to take a few moments to explain my situation so as to reduce the frustration.

The main reason my shop is on the first level of my house and is only open 20 hours a week is because of my health issues.

I have a great life but pretty much have to plan my days around managing chronic pain.

I have had severe scoliosis since I was a kid, wore braces, and have had over 3 huge surgeries to reconstuct and stabalize my spinal column.

At age 50 I have chronic muscle spasms in my upper back and severe stiffness and pain in my lower back and hips

My mobility is limited as well as my stamina.

I am currently being helped by a pain specialist locally and use various drug therapies as well as a Ten’s unit.

All these things help and that is why I can have the shop at all.

Full time is just out of the question for me.

So that’s why I am closed Sun thru tues and don’t open until the crack of noon!!!!

Having the shop in my home eliminates rent which takes away a lot of financial pressue that other shop owners deal with.  This is also reflected in my prices.

I worked for several people over the years in the antique business and the whole goal of doing my own thing is to be able to have the freedom to do whatever I want and adjust my goals around my physical limitations.

This is frustrat ing to many of my customers and business associates who want so bad to “help” me improve my sales, displays, hire emplyees, etc.

The truth is I am doing exactly want I want at the pace I can handle and am having lots of fun.

I am making enough money to make me happy and to enable me to constantly buy new merchandise.

So I guess I don’t plan to fix what isn’t broken!!!!!

Thanks for understanding!

  1. First off, I have to say, I adore you’re store. When ever I visit my Aunt (I’m hoping to visit your store this week actually), we always try to stop in.

I always wondered why you had such strange hours. I hope your treatment helps you, my Grandmother has scoliosis, I’ve seen first hand how much it can render on life. I’m glad it hasn’t held you back from having such an amazing store.

    Best wishes!

  2. Allison, Thanks so much for the kind thoughts. Look forward to seeing you again!
