Red Lion gets a new Coffee Shop!

by Rick

It’s the little things in life - right? Like having a coffee shop you can walk to in the morning.

I’m not all that particular about my joe, (not like my friend Tim at Dine in or Take out where his tag line is “Some people eat to live; I live to eat.” He should change it to “I live to eat and drink Starbucks!” ) but I do enjoy good coffee. We usually have multiple bags of coffee beans in the house to grind & brew. Since we live in PA and I work mostly in MD I have to leave early a lot of mornings. If I brewed coffee in the morning most of it would be cold till the Vintage One got downstairs so I usually stop at our local Rutters (Southern PA equivalent to Super America, 7-11, WaWa, Sheetz - you get the picture) for coffee and a breakfast sandwich.

I took a slightly different route to Rutters this morning and WHOA - is that a coffee shop on Main Street? Just a half block from the house? As we learned to say in Minnesnowtah - Ubetcha! I parked the car and went into the Red Lion Whistle Brew Coffee Shop and was warmly greeted by Chelsea, one of the two sisters who opened the shop just a week ago.

There are plenty of tables as well as sofas and comfy chairs to sit in. I asked Chelsea about WiFi availability and she said it’s in the works. I really hope they do well and it catches on in our little corner of the world.

At the turn of the Millenium JoAnn & I sold our house in Minneapolis and bought a sailboat which we spent the better part of a year on. One of the places we stopped and stayed for awhile was Beaufort, NC (the one pronounced Bofert, Beaufort pronounced Boofert is in SC) and one of the things I really liked about Beaufort was the coffee shop close to the City Dock. There was a core group of locals that hung out there in the morning dunking pastries in their coffee. Transients like us were warmly welcomed. It was a great way to start the day. I hope that the Whistle Brew turns into that kind of place.

We have a menu at Vintage JoAnn so you can hop on over for coffee or a snack before or after you stop at VJ. The Whistle Stop is located at 23 S Main Street in Red Lion in between Rep. Stan Saylor’s office and the Fitness Factory. Hours are currently 6:00 am to 7:00 pm but that’s subject to adjustment as the girls figure out what works best.

I think the Whistle Brew will very nicely compliment my other favorite eating establishment in Red Lion - The Ice Cream House - which we also have a menu for. I love the pulled pork and burger in sauce sandwiches here and they also have salads and soups and - well just stop in for yourself and try it out. The ice cream is excellent as well and they have usually have at least two flavors of sugar-free.

  1. I can’t wait to check out the new coffee shop. I heard people talking about it last week when I had my nails done at Shades Salon & Spa.

I have been to the Ice Cream House, on Rick’s recommendation of course. I really enjoyed that. Great atmosphere inside, but I loved being able to savor my sundae at a table on the deck outside. The large parking lot is a great plus too!

  2. Thanks for the plug. I of course am always up for a good cup of Joe! I do like to support local shops also. I just don’t have one on the way to the office!

  3. The coffee shop’s official Grand Opening is this weekend. Stop in, say hi to the girls and get a delicious cop of coffee. Put yourself in the drawing for one of three MP3 players.
