We had an unexpected surprise Saturday. JoAnn was in the shop and I was working on our kitchen remodel. The phone rang and caller ID said it was our daughter, Jen. I answered “Hey how are you sweetie!?” and my son-in-law’s voice answered “Just fine and you?”. Never trust caller id I guess.
After a few more pleasantries he asks what we’re doing for lunch. “I don’t know - why? Where are you guys?” They were 15 minutes away in Leader Heights getting off the highway to come see us on their way to a friend’s in Baltimore. Jen & Jason live in Queensbury, NY which is about an hour north of Albany, 7 hours from Red Lion.
In the background Jen says somethng about needing something (anything) to eat with Old Bay on it. Since JoAnn couldn’t leave the shop I called the best damn crab place in York County, S&S Crabs, and ordered a couple of dozen. When Jen & Jason got here, Jason and I went to pick up the crabs, got some fresh picked corn from a farm stand and somehow or another a couple of 6 packs of beer jumped in the car too. Well those of you familiar with Chesapeake Bay bluefin crabs know you can’t possibly eat them without some beer.
So if you were at Vintage JoAnn’s on Saturday and thought you smelled something wonderful coming from the kitchen you were right on.

Finally a food blog! Or maybe I missed one. One of my fondest memories of my grandparents place in Coles Point, Virginia on the Potomac was picking blue crabs on the picnic table! Another memory was fishing waist deep when my grandfather would feel around with his feet pull up an oyster shuck it, down the hatch and throw the shells back in the water. Now that is fresh! Does this place do oysters? It is Septembe”R”. I say oyster roast!
Tim - We’re having crabs (and ribs) in a couple of weeks. I’ll send you an invite. Maybe we can add oysters to the menu as well. On a related note we took Mr. Link to another fave restaurant for crab cakes today - G&M in Baltimore.
