vintage fashion is everywhere!

by JoAnn

I’m totally addicted to fashion magazines.

As many of you know, there are piles of them in the shop to enjoy.  I love vintage magazines, and collect old Vogues.

I also subscribe to lots of new mags such as Vogue, Lucky, Elle, Bazaar, GlamourIn Style, Romantic Homes, Victorian Homes, etc.

It helps me keep on top of current fashion which is always linked to the vintage scene.

In the July issue of In Style magazine, Staff members were asked to name their signature fashion pieces and 3 out of 4 mentioned favorite vintage pieces!!!!

Antique earrings from Paris were mentioned as well as a distinctive Mariam Haskell necklace , and a darling little cotton jumper an editorial assistant found in a thrift shop!!!!!!

I am always looking for Mariam Haskell pieces myself. Her jewelry designs are so unique and collectable.

Elsewhere in this magazine Balenciaga and Marc Jacob’s Mod 60′s reminicent designs were shown on Actress Anne Hathaway.

Don’t ya love it??!!!!

As far as I’m concerned, enjoyment of current fashion is greatly enhanced by knowledge and appreciation of past fashions and designers.  Modern designers borrow and are inspired by the past consistently.

In this month’s issue of Bazaar, I laughed out loud when I skimmed a page captioned “What’s New”, and a vintage cuff and a vintage brooch from gardenscollections.com were featured!

Some of the dress designs were almost identical to various 50′s and 40′s designs I have in the shop right now.

Speaking of dresses , yesterday I purchased some FABULOUS dresses from a dedicated fashion collecter who is down sizing as she prefers the really antique fashions, such as Victorian and Edwardian, and even much older!

Your gain as the 40′s and 50′s , and 60′s things she brought in are adorable!!  One of the 40′s dresses is a Herbert Sondheim original from New York  and another black 40′s dress is in mint condition including the satin collar with pearls and sparkling rhinestone brooch.  Even the matching belt is flawless.

My favorites are are the 50′s shirtwaist dresses, very Lucille ball!

Some of the late 60′s and early 70′s items are totally cool. I got 2 stunning Pantsuits with sparkly trim. One is a metallic silver tunic top that could be worn as a mini dress but it does include mathing pants and matching shoes. The shoes are silver maryjanes with rhinestone buckles.!

She also sold me many hats and the 1940′s examples are really great.   Several of those little velvet numbers that perch on the head in a sexy, jaunty little attitude.

This lot also included a Dior style 50′s picture hat with chiffon overlay from the 50′s and others too numerous to mention.

By the way—-How do you all feel about doubleknit polyester? Some of my customers hate that stuff from the 70′s but I still sell lots of cute designs in the stuff to the younger ones.

At least it does’nt need ironed!!!!

Gotta go as I have loads of catching up to do including organizing 6 months of receipts I have been ignoring!
